Guest Speaker: HIWC Member Andrea Shea, German/American Dual Citizen & Daycare Provider
Andrea Shea is currently working as an Erzieherin, a daycare provider, for 1 to 3 year olds at a family center in Nussloch. Born in California, she split her time fairly evenly between Germany and the U.S., always managing to switch countries whenever she was in danger of forgetting one of her two languages. Along the way she studied Linguistics, French and Japanese, finally spending two years teaching English in Japan. She talked her husband into moving to Germany with their two children in 2001, first living in Bavaria, then settling south of Heidelberg.
The talk will present the book Achtung, Baby: An American Mom on the German Art of Raising Self-Reliant Children. After reviewing the key arguments we will discuss our own experiences – as children, as parents – and perhaps gain a greater perspective on cultural differences in child raising. We might also consider the question of how much something as personal/familial as parenting is subject to global trends.
