CURRENT TARGET PROGRAM 2022-2025 - ENVIRONMENT

The Target Program Environment aims to bring awareness to Environmental Issues that affect us all. "Our Natural Environment: Empowering Women and Girls to Ensure a Sustainable Future" was selected as the theme for Project submissions.  After the project application and selection period concluded, the announcement of the next FAWCO Target Project Environment was made in Bratislava during the Biennial Conference in March 2023. Funds raised over the course of the next three years will support the FAWCO Target Environment 2022-2025 Project, Awesome Blossoms. Working together we can surpass our goal of $140,000!

AWESOME BLOSSOMS

The Project
Awesome Blossoms is the latest evolution of a community-based organization, Safe Spaces, created by Mrs. Peninah Nthenya Musyimi.

This project features organic, water-efficient urban farms with 500 gardens in each farm to support girls’ education and empowerment programs and with 75 women in partnership with three primary schools located in the Mathare slum area of Nairobi

Background:
Founder/Director Peninah Nthenya Musyimi was the first woman from the Eastland slums to attend university and become an attorney and the only one to become a Kenyan basketball star. Peninah never forgot her roots, returning to the slums in 2008 to start Safe Spaces with a mission: to create a safe space there for girls and young women to learn, develop and grow into strong qualified women who can escape poverty, violence and systematic exclusion and go on to become confident leaders, problem-solvers in their communities and now stewards of the environment.

HOW MUCH HAS HIWC RAISED?

Since the current target project was announced in March 2023, our club has been working hard to help Fawco reach their goal of raising $140,000 for this cause. HIWC has raised nearly $3,000 (as of February 2024) and has reached TULIP DONOR on the Fawco Donor Wall. Thanks to all the club members who have given their time and effort to our cause.

HOW WE DO THIS?

We raised money mainly through fundraising events such as the Christmas Advent Market in December, the Chinese New Year Charity Lunch Buffet in February and Lebendiger Neckar in June. We also sell handmade items such as reusable make-up pads, knitted socks, tea towels, shopping bags, beeswax wrappers, homemade jams and spice blends.
