This will be our first MM after the summer holiday. Did you know that there is a Deutsch Amerikanischer Frauenclub e.V. (DAFC / GAWC - German American Women's Club) in Heidelberg? Their mission was to promote understanding, peace and friendship between the nations after the difficult years of war. The GAWC was founded in 1948 by American and German women and has around 140 members from every corner of the world. We're thrilled to announce that we will be welcoming two of their board members as our special guest speakers! They'll be sharing insights into their club and activities, which will help us gain a deeper understanding of the amazing work that GAWC is doing. It's going to be a truly fascinating and inspiring evening! Make sure you join us! To join please contact: activities@heidelbergiwc.org

FAWCO Environment Film Club: We Are Guardians
Friday, October 11, 2024, 8:00–10:00 pm CET
We Are Guardians follows Indigenous forest guardian Marçal Guajajara and activist Puyr Tembé as they fight to protect their territories from deforestation, an illegal logger who has no choice but to cut the forest down, and a large landowner at the mercy of thousands of invaders and extractive industry. Through intimate, character-focused storytelling, the film brings the issues to the forefront — from the science of the Amazon Rainforest and its pivotal role in our global climate stability to the economic drivers of deforestation. The film weaves together politics, history, economics, science, and consciousness, providing an in-depth exploration of this incredibly complex and critical situation — the origins and the impact of which ripple out far beyond the boundaries of the Amazon itself. Directed by Indigenous activist Edivan Guajajara and environmental filmmakers Chelsea Greene and Rob Grobman; produced by Academy Award winner Fisher Stevens and executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Let's come together and make more heart pillows! This time, we're getting help from the amazing students at Schiller University. We've got a lot of work to do, but it'll all be worth it in the end. We'll be cutting, sewing, filling and closing those pillows. This charity event is for everyone, even if you're not into sewing. We're aiming to make as many heart pillows as possible, which will be donated to NCT Heidelberg. So, come and join us for a good cause – we'd love to see you there!

Ten Tips: A Workshop on Writing the Memorable Memoir with Judith Huge
Saturday, October 19, 2024, 4:00–5:30 pm CET
Register here and enter code FAWCO24 when prompted
FAWCO’s Literacy is Our Legacy – A Celebration team is excited to announce that the International Women’s Writing Guild (IWWG) is offering to ALL FAWCO members a complimentary memoir workshop led by acclaimed IWWG instructor Judith Huge. Judith's workshop, Ten Tips: A Workshop on Writing the Memorable Memoir, is designed to help you unlock your personal stories, guiding you through the process of memoir writing with her expert techniques and compassionate approach.
Author Amy Hempel writes, “I meet a person, and in my mind I’m saying three minutes; I give you three minutes to show me the spark.” This is true for readers too. Once you capture your readers’ attention, your job is to hold it so your story becomes part of their own experience, takes up residence in their own memory, becomes a memoir that has mattered to them.
In this workshop, we will work closely with each other and with your own writing to increase the chance this happens. Topics include using your opening paragraphs to show them “the spark,” continuing to add questions your readers will crave the answers to, becoming a narrative voice that, in Kelly Corrigan’s words, your readers “will want to spend three (or three hundred) pages with.” We also work on revealing your characters’ complications (including yours) through actions and increasing the resonance of your writing by adding a third arc to the usual two: narrative and character. Memoir can become more memorable; this intensive workshop helps you discover how.ABOUT JUDITH HUGE
Judith Huge has spent over 30 years developing innovative approaches to both learning and writing. As president of her own national consulting firm, teacher of both undergraduate and graduate-level college courses, and director of writing workshops across the United States, she has made a difference in the way thousands of people find, craft, and promote their writing voices. She is a co-author of 101 Ways You Can Help: How to Offer Comfort and Support to Those Who Are Grieving (Sourcebook, 2009), as well as A Middle Aged Woman and the Sea, a tale of loss and transition.Register for this workshop and enter code FAWCO24 when prompted.

At this monthly meeting, we will be welcoming a guest speaker from "Anna". Founded in July 2018, "Anna" is a low-threshold counselling service for people in prostitution. It is run by the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church in Heidelberg and funded by the City of Heidelberg. Together, the Diakonisches Werk and the city's Office for Equal Opportunities have taken on the pioneering task of designing and setting up this much-needed counselling service. This service centre is named after Anna Blum from Heidelberg, who lived from 1843 to 1917. She was the founder of women's aid organisations in the Grand Duchy of Baden.
